Richard Wagner (1813-1883)


Bio

Wilhelm Richard Wagner was born in Leipzig. He studied at Leipzig University and greatly impressed his music teachers there. He began composing operas and quickly gained the attention of Meyerbeer, Hiller, Semper, and others with several successes. His political activity forced him to leave Germany for a time but he eventually returned and was a celebrity of the highest order throughout Europe. He advanced musical theory while establishing the most successful German opera career to date.
