Egon Wellesz (1885-1974)
Bio
Egon Joseph Wellesz CBE FBA, was born in Vienna to Hungarian Jewish parents. He studied law at the University of Vienna but, after viewing Von Weber's Der Fresichütz, chose music instead. He studied composition and theory under Schoenberg and musicology under Adler. He left Austria for England in the buildup to World War II, and his compositions gained him friends, such as Vaughan Williams, and honors, such as an honorary doctorate from Oxford.
