Carl Ruggles (1876-1971)
Bio
Carl Sprague Ruggles was born in Massachusetts. He taught himself music and became something of a child celebrity playing roadside concerts for President Grover Cleveland. His compositions earn him both some living and opportunities to work as a teacher at the Mar D'Mar School, director of music for the YMCA, and finally professor of composition at the University of Miami. Along with composing, he was also an avid painter.
