Anton Rubinstein (1829-1894)


Bio

Anton Grigoryeich Rubinstein was born in the Russian Empire, in the region that is now Moldova. His parents were Jewish but the family converted to Russian Orthodox when he was a child. He attempted to enter the Paris Conservatoire but instead impressed the local piano superstars Liszt & Chopin and began a life of piano touring and composing. He became an international giant and returned to Russia to reform the St Petersburg Conservatory but politics forced him to live part-time there and part-time in Dresden.
