George Rochberg (1918-2005)
Bio
George Rochberg was born in New Jersey. He studied at the Mannes College of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music. Among his teachers were Gian Carlo Menotti and George Szell. He fought in WWII and then taught at the University of Pennsylvania for 15 years. He initially composed with serial technique but abruptly returned to a more tonal base after his son died.
