Carlos Chávez (1899-1978)


Bio

Chávez was the founder and first director of the Mexican Symphony Orchestra. He was born in Mexico City and quickly demonstrated a knack for music and cultural observation. He wrote for El Universal a Mexico City newspaper for over 30 years while composing Mexican nationalistic music. He directed efforts to establish catalogs of indigenous Mexican music, briefly as the head of Mexico's National Conservatory of Music, and traveled as a guest conductor around Mexico and the United States.
