Gustave Charpentier (1860-1956)


Bio

Charpentier studied in the Paris Conservatoire and developed a reputation for trying to shock his instructors. He came to prominence with the debut of his opera Louise. He was very active in French society founding an organization creating work opportunities for young girls and creating two others for wounded French soldiers from World War I. He was awarded the Légion d'honneur and rose to Grand Officer before his death.
