Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869)
Bio
Gottschalk was born in New Orleans to a large family. He was a prodigious pianist and was sent to the Paris Conservatoire at 13. He was rejected initially due to being an American but worked his way to prominence being praised by the great pianists of his day, Chopin, Liszt, and Alkan. Gottschalk was immensely influenced by his cajun upbringing and travels in the Caribbean. He tragically passed at 40 due to an overdose of quinine.
