Charles Gounod (1818-1893)
Bio
Charles-François Gounod was born in Paris to a painting father and a pianist mother. He showed an early inclination in the arts and had private tutoring from Anton Reicha before entering the Conservatoire de Paris. He met Berlioz there and was profoundly impressed. He composed many Operas, Masses, Oratorios, and other theater forms as well as a catalog of instrumental music in the Classical style. He was considered a harbinger by the French giants Massenet, Fauré, and Debussy.
