Hector Berlioz (1803-1869)

Bio

The son of a doctor, Berlioz went to Paris to study medicine but did not enjoy it. He instead attended the Paris Conservatory and was a master guitarist and flutist. He entered the Grand Prix de Rome several times and finally won on his fifth attempt. He made his money as a critic and traveling conductor. France did not accept his music during his lifetime and he died in isolation.
